I read ‘Oedipus Rex’ over two decades ago, sitting in my car in a dimly lit underground car park during my lunch breaks. I felt anti-social not sharing my meals with my work colleagues in the lunchroom upstairs, but I’d been hypnotised by the power of this ancient Greek play. I couldn’t tear myself away from the story, the language, the sheer heartbreaking humanity of it – it has haunted me ever since.

Loukia Avalanou, representing Greece, is using 360˚ virtual reality equipment to show us the desperation of King Oedipus as he is banished out of Thebes, in the play, ‘Oedipus at Colonus’. She has filmed Roma people living in a shanty town near Athens ( themselves living in harsh, undignified conditions ) to act out some of the dramatic scenes.
